Zoom's Hidden Asset: The Anthropic Stake That Could Rewrite Its Valuation

0xIvy

Hook

Over the past 90 days, Zoom's stock has traded in a narrow band, largely ignoring the one data point that could break the pattern. The company holds a stake in Anthropic, the AI lab valued at $60-80 billion. Yet the market prices Zoom as if this asset doesn't exist. Let's look at the data.

Check the chain, not the hype. Zoom's market cap sits at roughly $12 billion. If its Anthropic stake is even 1% of the AI firm, that's $600-800 million in hidden value—5-7% of Zoom's entire valuation. The anomaly is not that Zoom owns the stake; it's that the market refuses to price it in.

Context

Zoom's core business is in trouble. Post-pandemic, revenue growth collapsed from 326% in FY2021 to 3-7% in FY2024. The video conferencing market is saturated, and Microsoft Teams—backed by OpenAI's GPT-4—is eating its lunch. Zoom's AI Companion, its answer to the AI arms race, relies on external models. Anthropic is its primary partner.

But the investment itself is shrouded in opacity. No one knows the exact amount, the round, or the lock-up terms. The only confirmed fact: Zoom participated in an Anthropic funding round, likely in 2023. That's it. For a data detective, that's a red flag.

Core: The On-Chain Evidence Chain — Financial Edition

Let's build a reproducible methodology. I've audited 15 ERC-20 whitepapers in 2017, and I apply the same rigour here. First, we need to triangulate the investment size.

Step 1: Estimate Zoom's investment capacity. Zoom's cash and equivalents at the end of FY2024 were $5.4 billion. It spent $1.2 billion on M&A and investments in the last two years. A typical corporate venture investment in a $5-10 billion AI startup would be $50-150 million. Let's assume $100 million.

Step 2: Determine the valuation at investment. In 2023, Anthropic raised at a $5-15 billion valuation. At $100 million, Zoom would own between 0.67% and 2% of the company. Using the midpoint of $10 billion, a 1% stake is $100 million.

Step 3: Apply current valuation. By late 2024, Anthropic's valuation hit $60-80 billion. A 1% stake is now worth $600-800 million. That's a 6-8x return on paper. But hold on—data doesn't lie, but assumptions can.

Let's cross-verify with comparable deals. Salesforce invested $300 million in Anthropic at a similar valuation, getting around 2.4%. That suggests a 1:1 ratio—$125 million per 1% stake. If Zoom invested $100 million, it would own roughly 0.8%. That's $480-640 million today.

Now, run the stress test. What if the AI bubble bursts? A 50% drop in Anthropic's valuation to $35 billion would cut Zoom's stake to $280 million. Still a gain, but not a game-changer. The real risk is if Zoom's core business continues to decline.

I built a simple Excel model: Zoom's current enterprise value is $11 billion. Subtract the estimated Anthropic stake value ($600 million) gives a core business value of $10.4 billion. That implies a P/S multiple of 4.5x on FY2024 revenue of $4.6 billion. Compare to Microsoft's Teams-linked business valued at 8x revenue. The discount is 44%. That's the market's skepticism about Zoom's AI capabilities.

Contrarian: Correlation Is Not Causation

The market is correct to be skeptical. The assumption that Zoom's AI stake automatically boosts its valuation rests on three flawed premises.

First, the stake is illiquid. Venture investments in private AI labs have strict lock-ups—typically 12-24 months from the investment date. Zoom's 2023 investment likely can't be sold until 2024-2025. The market can't price a non-tradable asset.

Second, the AI premium is a narrative, not a structural shift. Salesforce's stock jumped 5% on its Anthropic news, but the gain was erased within three months. The market quickly realized that owning a stake doesn't make you an AI company.

Third, Zoom's core business is still bleeding. Revenue growth is flat, and the AI Companion has not yet monetized at scale. If the company's main product is in decline, a one-time windfall from an asset sale won't fix the long-term trajectory.

Rigour over rumour. The real question is: is this stake a hedge or a distraction? Based on my experience in 2020 building yield aggregation models, I learned that non-core assets can mask fundamental weaknesses. Zoom's AI stake is a classic example—it buys time, but not a solution.

Takeaway: The Next Signal

Yield follows logic, not luck. The next critical data point is Zoom's Q4 FY2025 earnings call, expected in February 2025. If management discloses the Anthropic stake in the financial statements, the market will reprice. If they remain silent, the anomaly persists.

Set a data trigger: if Zoom's stock drops below $60, it signals a liquidity stress test—investors are ignoring the hidden asset. If it breaks above $75, the market is pricing in the AI premium. Either way, the data will speak.

Check the chain, not the hype. The chain here is the SEC filing, the funding round, and the quarterly report. Until those are verified, the stake remains a ghost asset. And in a bear market, ghosts are the most dangerous liabilities.
